Our Story
Roomie is a great stay, but we’re also about a greater good.
Built on the site of the old Avondale Returned Services Association, Roomie has valued and supported Avondale’s local community from its very beginning and is located in a place with heaps of history – as the RSA headquarters, the site has been steeped in the past, honouring returned servicemen, as well as celebrating the present with raucous 21sts, parties and dinners held in the clubrooms since 1933, now relocated down the road.
During the COVID 19 lockdowns, the just-built Roomie Apartment Hotel building was given a new and important task of housing Auckland’s most vulnerable. Over 400 West Aucklanders were able to take shelter and live safely with us during the pandemic on their journey to find permanent housing of their own. Their success rate, living beautifully in community and finding and keeping rentals, set a new benchmark for empathetic social housing in New Zealand.
We continue to be committed to social good, so rest well knowing that when you stay with us at Roomie, you’ll be staying it forward. A percentage of your stay goes towards supporting those in the community who do not have a stable and safe roof over their heads to have one too.
We are also proud to:
- Have a Hapori Kaitiaki supporting manaakitanga
- Have dedicated rooms for working and service dogs
- Offer equitable rates for guests needing accessible units
- Support our local community artists
- Support local Avondale businesses
- Stock Forest & Bird and other charitable ventures’ amenities
